Great Basin National Park to Reno,NV
13 Mountain Ranges
Welcome to the Cross Nevada Mountain Bike Ride grassroots fundraising event for the Livestrong Foundation!
My name is Jason Susslin.
In 1993 I started planning a mountain bike ride across the state, but my wife and I had three daughters to raise so the idea was put on hold for a while.
In 2004 my brother Dan (45) lost his eleven year battle with Cancer. The loss of my brother changed my life. The ride turned from a personal goal into a grass-roots fund raising event for the Livestrong Foundation.
The kids grew up, and in September 2008 after 15 years of waiting the ride was on. I was supported by a truck driven by my friend Josh (and future son-in-law Corey). We camped our way across Nevada - from Genoa to Baker, NV. Ten(10) days of riding, 12 mountain ranges, 32,000'+ of climbing, one flipped truck, and 500 miles - the ride was completed.
It was established that the route was going to work so I have made a promise to myself (and Dan) to complete the ride every other year - for as long as my legs hold up - as a fundraiser for the Livestrong Foundation.
This year we will be riding from Great Basin National Park (Baker, NV) to Reno - East to West. The same route just in reverse, with the addition of the last leg into Reno. This will be the 3rd ride for me.
There aren't adequate words to describe what it is like to mountain bike this route. It cuts through the heart of the Great Basin. Which one day will be the "Mecca of Mountain Biking" in the U.S. or anywhere for that matter. You'll cross over a mountain range every day, and sometimes two. We start in a National Park, bike by 10 Wilderness areas, camp in Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park, and soak in hot springs along the way. Nevada is the only state in the country that you can string together this many dirt roads, and this many mountain ranges - thanks to all the Public Land. It is an isolated route with only a few small communities in 500 miles of biking. If you want one of the most unique mountain biking experiences of your life come join us. Preferably as a fund raising participant, but if you want to jump in for a day all are welcome.
Also use the information in this website to organize your own adventure. E-mail me for any advice I'm glad to share what I've learned.
The long term goal of this event is to raise money to help Cancer patients through the Livestrong Foundation, and introduce as many mountain bikers as possible to the vast beauty of the Great Basin in Nevada.
